Frequently Asked Questions
Why did it take so long to find Bluebird?
Bluebird K7 was never actually lost. After the accident on 4 January 1967, Campbell's mother & sister expressed the wish that the crash-site be treated as a grave. In 1967 only the elite naval divers could dive to 150 ft where Bluebird lay. Since then, better equipment & mixed gas apparatus have put such a depth into amateur divers' reach. Campbell's daughter Gina became concerned about ghouls & vandals, and, when she heard Bill Smith was searching, asked him to recover her father's remains - and the boat if it were salvageable.
