About Coniston

Coniston  is  a  blue  and  green  slate  traditional  Lakeland  working  village, half  as  old  as  time, named  in  honour  of  a  long-forgotten  chieftain  or  'king'.

The  community  nestles  in  the  lee  of  The  Old  Man  of  Coniston  - Wainwright  compared  the  position  as  akin  to  Zermatt  and  The  Matterhorn  -  and  is  surrounded  by  spectacular  rugged  crags  and  foaming  waterfalls. Panoramic  'picturesque'  views  of  lake  and  mountain  can  be  enjoyed  from Coniston  Water.

Coniston  lies  in  the  heart  of  the  real  Lake  District, and  is  one  of  the  area’s  hidden  gems - well  worth  a  visit.

Activities
You can take part in all sorts of outdoor adventure activities in Coniston from rock-climbing to sailing and everything in-between.

Parking
There  is  coach  parking  on  the  main  village  car  park, with  overflow  capacity (and  an  honesty  box) in  the  school  holidays  at  John  Ruskin  School  in  Lake  Road. The  School  is  happy  to  provide  parking  facilities, by  prior arrangement, in  term-time. .

Eating Out
There  are  several  pubs  offering  excellent  bar  meals, and  a  range  of  cafes.

Toilets
These can be found on  the  main  car  park, and  between  the  bridge  and  the  petrol station  in  the centre  of  the  village.

Cash Points
The  petrol  station  and  the  village  Post  Office  have  cash  points , and  Barclays  Bank  is  open  on  Mondays , Wednesdays  and  Fridays , and  offers  a  shared  banking  facility.
